Congratulations to...

Toby Starborg, Hui Lu, David Holmes & Karl Kadler
Their paper (T.Starborg, Y. Lu, A. Holmes, K.E. Kadler: Electron microscope 3D reconstruction of branched collagen fibrils in vivo), published in 2009 has been selected as one of the two winners of the MESSNER PRICE 2010.  The prize is given to the corresponding authors of the best papers during 2009 in the journal, Scand J Med Science Sports, with the primary purpose of supporting high quality research on a sound ethical basis in the wide field of Sports Medicine.

Grants awarded

Andrew Gilmore
CRUK project grant entitled: The role of the BH3-only protein Bid in mitosis and paclitaxel resistance. Three years commencing April '10, with Dr. Jennefer Lindsay.

Congratulations to Andrew Gilmore, for helping to secure a EMBO Long Term Fellowship for Dr. Barbara Schellenberg, who will be in Andrew's lab for two years from May '10. The grant is on Reversible mitochondrial targeting of Bax during anoikis, and it will examine the removal of pro-apoptotic Bax from mitochondria by the proteasome following activation of ECM signalling. Barbara is from the Institute of Plant Biology, University of Zurich, Switzerland, where she has worked on novel proteasome inhibitors.

Conference talks

Paul Bishop
